STRAPPED FOR CASH to take care of her medical bills and with no support from her grown children who are all unemployed, 54 year-old Olga Barnett tried to make ends meet by selling ganja in the small shop she operates in New Ramble, St James.
The elderly woman's candid responses in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday was a refreshing change as she came clean and admitted to the court her wrongs.
She drew laughter when she told Senior RM Winsome Henry that she did not know how the ganja got into her deep freeze as she normally keeps it under the shop counter.
Drugs in freezer
Ms. Barnett was arrested and charged on Friday, July 15 when the police carried out a search of her shop and found a plastic bag containing 42 packets of ganja weighing about four ounces hidden in the freezer.
She was arrested and charged with possession of and dealing in ganja.
She was fined $400 or 10 days in jail for the charge of possession and $800 or 10 days in jail for dealing.
RM Henry cautioned her that the next time she is brought before the court for similar charges, she would have to spend time in prison.
