Drivers beware - Main road has collapsed

By GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer

The collapsed section of the Christiana to Spaldings main road in Manchester. - george henry

SPALDINGS, CLARENDON:

A SECTION OF the Christiana to Spaldings main road in Manchester has collapsed. The collapse took place in an area known as Bamboo just over 120 metres from the Percy Junior hospital.

When THE STAR visited the area on Monday, the road was reduced to single lane traffic and the bad section of the thoroughfare was observed to be sunken about 18 inches below the surface of the drivable section.

The area was also seen secured with security tape and motorists were proceeding with caution, especially those driving from a westerly direction from Christiana, as it is their side of the road which has collapsed.

THE STAR has learnt that the damaged section of the roadway at Bamboo has been, for some time now, showing signs that it could go at anytime and nothing was done to prevent the occurrence. There were huge cracks in the roadway as the road was constructed in an area where the soil is soft.

The collapse occurred recently during heavy rains associated with Hurricane Dennis as the area was saturated with water and unable to hold up to the bad weather.

No heavy vehicles

Heavy units could soon be asked to avoid driving on the section of the road currently being used as that part has several cracks and could give way at anytime.

The Spaldings Police are calling on road users to approach the area with caution and to be courteous to each other as failing to do so could result in accidents.

In the meantime, the National Works Agency is being asked to take the necessary steps to have the road repaired with urgency so that normalcy can return to the roadway, especially since it is a busy thoroughfare which is so close to the hospital.
