THEY NEED A hit!
That's the word from recording label Greensleeves Records for deejays Kid Kurupt and Predator.
Deejays Predator and Kid Kurupt celebrated with fans when they signed album deals with the English record label giant Greensleeves Records in 2004. The deals meant potentially tremendous exposure in the UK for both acts, who at that time had developed somewhat of a buzz in the dancehalls on popular rhythms.
To date, however, there have been no album releases and although fans of the deejays have heard new tracks on the radio they have not seen any albums.
Kid Kurupt could not be reached up to press time, but when contacted, his label mate Predator explained that he has done his part of the bargain with Greensleeves Records, and is patiently waiting for his debut album to be released.
"A dem mi a wait pon right now. I sent the tracks already, nearly 20 a dem, but mi just a wait pon the word bout it," he stated.
When THE STAR contacted Green-sleeves, however, the label said that the deejays needed to turn up the heat before any albums could be released for them.
Press Officer for the label, Sharon Scott, speaking on behalf of Christopher Cracknell, the artistic and repertoire (A&R) director said ; "Based on what Chris and I spoke about, the reason the albums are not out yet is because they do not have any really hot tracks out there right now," she stated.
Decent material
"To make an album, they have to bring decent material, or of a certain standard. They need to have tracks out there hitting the charts and they are not doing it yet."
The label representative said the two deejays need to keep recording until they can find the breakthrough hit to propel them.
"As long as they do that consistently, then we can proceed with releasing the albums. Once that comes through, they are fine," Scott said.
Predator said he plans to reassert his place in the dancehalls, kicking it off with the track Head A Rest on the fast rising Anger Management rhythm. This, plus some upcoming tracks, he feels, will cement him solidly in the dancehall.
