THE EDITOR, Madam:
Quite recently I read a Letter to the Editor in THE STAR dated March 21. It was a letter entitled 'Employment agencies cannot be trusted', written by an angry citizen.
The letter was referring to employment agencies that are carrying ads in the newspaper that they have vacancies available, and when you call to ask about the work, they tell you to get registered and then one would go through an interview process before getting the work.
I think there is a trick in the general process which may result in there being no work available.
In fact, I guess this person must have read my mind because I was planning to write a letter regarding the lack of job opportunities in Jamaica.
I would like the public to be more alert in terms of people who are going around convincing the public that they can make jobs available for them at whatever cost. There are a few agencies promising that they can get jobs abroad, also at a certain cost. People in Jamaica are desperate for jobs, but even then, I don't think they should allow themselves to be blindfolded and fooled.
I think the relevant authority should do something as people are facing daily demands and the cost of living is increasing. We need to create opportunities in Jamaica or this country is going to come to a halt. If "everything a guh up and salary nah guh up", then what is going to happen to the future of the unfortunate Jamaicans who are getting a very low income?
There are a lot of Government lots that are available that I think, with just initiative, some factories and workshops can be built to provide people with jobs.
I am, etc.,
