Slavery alive and well in the US
THE EDITOR, Madam: Sometime ago the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) showed a documentary on slavery around the world which astonished me. I couldn't believe that the so-called upholder of liberty, the United States of America, have people who are involved in bandit slavery in this modern time. It was revealed that there are immigrants working on farms picking tomatoes for US$35 to every 100 buckets in the U.S. under bandit slavery. To make matters worse, the immigrants cannot leave those farms because they are under the watchful eyes of armed guards and those farm managers take away any immigration papers they may have. Wow, this scenario is the order of the day but the slavers need to know that "in the absence of compassion one can never be great." I am, etc., ALLAN MARTIN Namibia
