Reader-man charged for counterfeit note

western bureau:

A SELF-PROFESSED 'reader-man' was himself scammed recently when he tried to tender a counterfeit Canadian $50 bill at a bar in Montego Bay, St. James.

Wesley Campbell pleaded guilty with explanation to uttering a counterfeit note and was fined $10,000 in "genuine Jamaican dollars" or 30 days by Senior Resident Magistrate Ms Winsome Henry when he appeared in court recently.

The court heard that Campbell had tendered the bill at a bar in downtown Montego Bay on June 25 at around 12.20 a.m. when the bartender noticed something was wrong and alerted a police officer who was a patron in the bar.

In court the 36-year-old Campbell said it was night and the money looked "real crisp and good". He said he was paid the money by a woman who he had done some 'reading-up' for earlier in the day.
