THE EDITOR, Madam:
As a youth living in Jamaica and seeing how things are going, I honestly believe that guns, whether legal or illegal should be taken away.
Nowadays, watching or listening to the daily news, there are reports of people dying by the gun. Now, why would we want to increase the availability of guns in this country? Wouldn't that result in an increase in deaths? Mr. John Doe, a licensed firearm holder, was killed and his gun taken. What was the cause of his death? One may never know, but there is a surety that many gunmen kill for guns. These individuals would do anything just to get a hold on guns, even if it means killing.
Imagine little Jamaica being turned into a country such as Afghanistan where every nook and cranny has guns! Are we striving to be like them? Why can't we as people just live as one, or if we have to resort to violence, can't we just go back to those days of kicks and box?
Why do we have to use guns? Isn't that too much technology for us to handle? As the novel Shane by Jack Schaefer rightfully said, "a gun is as good or bad as the man who carries it".
Jamaicans, let us strive to live in unity and take these guns off the streets. Why put more guns on the streets, but yet you are trying to get rid of them? How ironic! "Let's get together and live all right, ONE LOVE...."
I am, etc.,
