THE EDITOR, Madam:
Quite a number of times I have been to a few business places and the approach that I got from security guards are not efficient at all. I will give you one instance. I have been to an organisation to transact business. The first person I saw at the entrance was a security officer. I explained the reason why I was there and the person I wished to speak with. The security called that department, he got no response. He said to me with an angered response "gwan up stairs and look see if yuh see who yuh want yah man because mi nuh know wah dem people deh a deal wid. Mi nuh know bout no ting. Dem nuh tell security no ting, further more mi company jus gi mi a one duty down here".
This is a poor service on the behalf of the security company. You should be selective when assigning security officers to organisations. Not because you are short of security personnel at a location you should just get a security and assign to a location urgently in need of a security.
I think that security supervisors should brief that security properly before stationing him/her at a business place.
Security guards should attire themselves properly when on assignment. Shoes should be properly cleaned, shirt or blouse neatly pressed and hair properly groomed. Be assertive to business place clients, speak properly to them even if you were not informed by the organisation about any activity supposed to be taking place. Show respect and demand respect from members of the public. Don't beg people!
I have experienced going to places and security saying, "beg yuh a money nuh, mi hungry, from morning mi nuh eat". People will look down on the character of security officers. It is better yuh call your supervisor and ask him/her for a lunch or lunch money.
Security guards should be respected to an extent. Stop degrading yourselves, it is better to stay hungry and keep your dignity. Security companies should keep regular meetings with security officers or make some handbooks that contain the guidelines of the company. A lot of security officers, because of the type of personality they portray, people look down on them. Stop beg, attire yourselves properly on the job, speak to people properly, try to be as assertive as possible in the line of duty. Remember, is not what you do it is how you do it.
I am, etc.,
