JAMAICA'S WORLD 100 metres record holder, Asafa Powell, has been voted the International Association of Athletics Federations' (IAAF) top performer for June.
According to the IAAF website, Powell, who set the world 100m record with 9.77 - 1482 points - in Athens at the Super Grand Prix, was easily voted the top track athlete for the month.
Powell also had other good performances in the month, first a 9.84 clocking for second in a photo-finish with American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin at the Prefontaine Classic, and followed that up with an impressive 9.85 in cold and windy conditions in Ostrava.
Australian Jana Pittman was the best female track athlete for the month.
The reigning world 400m hurdles champion won in Athens clocking 53.44, thereby earning 1362 points, the most for any woman since Paula Radcliffe won the London Marathon in April.
In the field, Olympic silver medallist Marian Oprea of Romania topped the men's division by winning the triple jump in Athens with 17.52m (1347 points), while reigning world long jump champion and heptathlon silver medallist Eunice Barber had the best field event performance of the month. Barber won in Arles with 6889 points (1345 points),
On the road, Christopher Cheboiboch from Kenya won the San Diego Tock 'n' Roll Marathon in 2:09:17 (1263 points) for the male honour while Lornah Kiplagat was the best on the road, winning the 10km the New York Mini 10K with 31:44 (1248 points).
