THE EDITOR, Madam:
The Public Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) shut down their businesses and called a meeting to voice their disgust at the continuous murder of the business people, as well as other murders. I hope the public sees the serious situation faced by the employers, workers and society on a whole if the businesses were to close permanently.
The churches are holding meetings in the troubled communities, even during an uprising. A family demonstrates when a member is murdered, asking the police to find the murderer/s. The police following the murder recently of four of their colleagues kept an all night vigil.
Why don't the residents of the inner city communities all get together and have meetings when someone is murdered there? Stand together just as the PSOJ has done.
Perhaps, if the churches, PSOJ, inner-city communities and the police should each stand up and come together like one big river, running to tell what they know it would decrease the crime rate.
But are the inner-city communities brave enough to get up on their own to close ranks and fight the criminals? Would they dare to stand up instead of wanting the PSOJ and others to do so for them? Would not some of them be seen as informers because they are seen at these meetings? PSOJ was not afraid to meet publicly, and if any of the gunmen know of any present who are undercover miscreants and posing as innocent, the gunmen should inform the authorities.
The PSOJ must be congratulated for the bold step they have taken and be given public support in every way.
