A WOMAN WHO had pleaded not guilty after it was alleged that she had boxed another woman in her face when she asked her for $600 she was owed, was found guilty and fined $60,000 or six months when she appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday.
Maureen Gayle of Leeds District, St. Elizabeth, was found guilty by Resident Magistrate Marlene Malahoo-Forte, who ordered her to pay the money within a week's time.
The court was told that on February 12 at about 11:45 p.m., the complainant Shernette Banton,of the same district, who operates a hairdressing parlour, was along with friends at a Red Stripe Party at Seven Corners near Leeds where she saw Miss Gayle and asked her for the $600 she owed for hair treatment.
The court was further told that the complainant went over to Miss Gayle and asked her for the money, but before she was through asking, Gayle used her right hand and hit her in her face causing damage to her left eye. The complainant and her friends went to the Santa Cruz Police Station the following day and reported the incident and Gayle was subsequently arrested and charged.
