WEEKS SINCE THE Police Torch Run has ended donations still continue to pour in to the police.
The Torch Run is staged every other year and is done to raise funds for Jamaica's Special Olympics team. The run sought to raise $2 million and, according to Superintendent Martin Bayliss of the Community Relations Department of the police force, the run was successful.
"We are still receiving donations and collecting the money raised from the divisions so we cannot say how much money we have raised so far but based on the collections, it appears successful," he said.
The Torch Run is a biennial affair by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force who run across the island to raise funds to assist the Jamaica Special Olympians to the Special Olympics.
Run affected
He said the run, which was launched in February, started officially on May 18 but was initially affected by police industrial action in Portland on the same day.
Determined to stay on track, the police skipped Portland and went to Annotto Bay in St. Mary and continued the run throughout the island.
All the police divisions were allotted specific sums of money to raise, which they have all surpassed. In addition Superintendent Bayliss said they also received several donations from corporate bodies towards the cause.
Although the actual run ended about a week after it started, Superintendent Bayliss says interested persons who wish to make donations to the fund raising activity can still do so.
Interested persons may contact the community relations head office at Ruthven Road in New Kingston or they can contact the community relations divisional leader at the respective police divisions.
