A MAN WHO bought a British visa for $80,000 will now pay $70,000 for his freedom or face nine months in prison.
Sheldon Neuman faced charges of forgery and uttering a forged document in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
It is alleged that on June 10, the accused was stopped at an airline's check point by a narcotics police officer who was conducting a random search of passengers at the Norman Manley International Airport.
Neuman presented a Jamaican passport with a British visa and his photograph. Upon careful examination the officer discovered the passport was tampered with. Neuman was arrested and charged.
RM Martin Gayle fined him $70,000 or nine months imprisonment hard labour for the forgery and for the uttering he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment hard labour, suspended for two years.
Neuman told the court he could not pay the entire fine and was allowed to pay $30,000 and given three weeks with surety to pay the balance.
