Yesterday's lead story about the new UK regulation to prevent young, single men at the 'marriageable' age from acquiring visas is disheartening.
The article stated that the report, which was based on immigration data from 2003, stated that the consulates in Jamaica and India, former British colonies, were denying entry to these young men.
The article further stated that this could be because authorities might be mindful that these young men, given the opportunity to meet British citizens or those settled in the U.K., might marry one of their women, hence, they could never get rid of them.
First of all, one has to wonder if this is a penalty for becoming a free state? It begs the question, are Americans, or Bermudans or citizens from the U.S. Virgin Islands or even the British Virgin Islands or Cayman Islands subjected to this new regulation?
What about the young man who has a bright future and decides to take root in Britain? What about even if the young man has a clean record, and extended family in that country?
But, on the flip side, perhaps that particular age group of Jamaican men have been abusing the system and have made it bad for poor John Doe who wanted a better life. One has to wonder if the shocking number of deportees fall within this age bracket.
Secondly, what about the women? Could they be next?
