Implications of politician's decision

THE LEAD STORY in yesterday's Gleaner spoke about the refusal of some parliamentarians to sign the declaration that states that they are disassociating themselves from criminals.

One member of parliament said that he was not signing the document because he was not involved with criminals and will not sign anything declaring that he will not have any contact with them.

He claimed the private sector's shutdown of the business sector last week was not a strong show of protest, because they had closed their businesses at the normal closing time on a Wednesday.

This latest declaration by the parliamentarians could only serve to put a dent in the private sector's plans to push for the government and the police to effectively attack the crime problem.

Certainly, if all parliamentarians follow suit and refuse to sign the declaration, the PSOJ will have an additional problem on its hands.

This latest move also raises some questions about how serious Jamaicans and politicians are about tackling crime.

How united are the officials and law-abiding Jamaicans against criminal activities in the society? It is clear that if everyone refuses to participate in the solution because they were never part of the problem, then the nation's crime problems have no end in sight.

As a nation we must all strive to be a part of the solution because only then will a strong attempt be made at solving the problem.
