Taxi driver on corruption charges

By ANGELO LAWRENCE, STAR Writer

Mandeville

LEIGHTON COOPER, A 38-year-old taxi operator of Race Course in Mile Gully, Manchester, is in the Mandeville police lock-up after being arrested on corruption charges.

It is alleged that Cooper was observed by Constable Albert Simpson of the Mandeville Traffic Department, operating an illegal taxi in the town at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday and was accosted by the policeman.

Cooper is said to have offered the policeman $2,000 not to charge him. Constable Simpson reported the matter to his superiors and a sting operation was set up.

When Cooper arrived at the station to pay-off the policeman he was promptly arrested by Cpl. Gary Levy and charged with attempted bribery. He is to appear in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
