DAMION DAVIS, A 28-year-old taxi-operator and jeweller of Sydenham, St. Catherine, was sentenced to 18 years at hard labour in the St. Catherine Circuit Court last Thursday when he appeared before High Court Judge Ingrid Magatal.
The crown led evidence that on June 6 last year at about 3:45 p.m., the complainant, who was 13, was coming from school when she took a taxi driven by the accused man whom she knew.
Taken to house
Instead of taking her to her destination after he let off the rest of passengers, he took her to his house in Sydenham where he raped her.
A subsequent report was made to the Spanish Town Police Station where the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offence and Child Abuse conducted an investigation that lead to the arrest and charging of Davis.
When he appeared in court, he was sentenced by the judge after being found guilty by a seven-member jury.
The judge told him he had shown no remorse in his action and that she has taken the age of the complainant into question, hence a strong message has to be sent.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Roy Stewart.
