Brooks remains in top form

FORMER Manchester High and G.C. Foster College sprinter Sherri-Ann Brooks missed the sprint double by the closest of margins at the weekend.

Running for Florida International University at the NCAA Division One East Regional meet Brooks, who has been in outstanding form this season, first won the 100 metres in 11.27 seconds but was pipped by Miami University's Charlette Gregg in the 200m. Both women were awarded the same time, 22.74.

Nadine Palmer, a former student of Holmwood Technical, was fifth in the 100m in 11.56 and seventh in the the 200m in 23.61. Palmer attends the University of Florida.

Pet event

At the same meet Jamaica's fastest man over the 400m this year, Ricardo Chambers of Florida State University, clocked 45.64 to win his pet event. Jamaica College old boy Sekou Clarke was sixth in 46.42. Clarke bagged gold in the 4x400m as his college team won the event in 3:04.95.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Olympian Shevon Stoddart of the University of South Carolina was third in 55.73 behind winner Dominique Darden (Miami), 55.51. Stoddart was also a member of the winning South Carlina 4x400m team which clocked 3:29.19.

Jamaican athletes had four victories in the Midwest region. Banned Jamaican sprinter Steve Mullings of Mississippi State University won the men's 100m in 10.13, Aneita Denton (Arkansas University) took the 800m in 2:04.75 with Camille Robinson (Illinois) third in 2:05.51. Carlene's twin sister Camille, also of Illinois, took the 400m hurdles in 57.44.

The women's 400m was won by former Vere technical athlete Patricia Hall in 52.79.

In the Midwest Division Jamaica's Melaine Walker running for Texas University was unlucky in the 400m hurdles. She was on target for a good time but had a mishap and fell back to finish second in 57.44. The event was won in a meet record 54.37 by Suana Smith of the University of Wyoming.

Walker, a former St. Jago High student, made amends in the sprint relay when she led her team to victory in 43.50.

Another former St. Jago High student, Althea Chambers (Texas Technical), was fourth in the 800m in 2:06.76. Oral Roberts' Mable Kunihern won in 2:05.43.
