Man pleads guilty to drug trafficking

WESTERN BUREAU:

A ST ANN man who told the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Tuesday he "was trying to build up life" by trying to smuggle 1.36kg (3lb) of ganja was remanded in custody.

Jermaine Smith pleaded guilty to trying to exporting ganja to the Bahamas on May 23, and will return to court on June 9 when he will be sentenced.

Smith was booked to leave the island on May 23 and was at the Sangster International Airport at around 11:30 a.m. when police dogs were alerted to bags with his name on the tags.

He was summoned and when the bags were opened in his presence, a false compartment was found with seven packages of compressed ganja found hidden in it.
