ON FRIDAY, THE Gleaner, THE STAR's sister publication led with a story which spoke about a group of policemen in Montego Bay being under probe for their part in a racket.
According to the story, the policemen allegedly collected US$50,000 (J$3 million) for the release of a man who was reportedly detained in a 'staged raid'.
Sadly, this story comes at a time when the police force is under the microscope for a variety of reasons. Firstly, in the last month several policemen have been killed or injured in the line of duty and secondly, the police are at present bargaining for a 47 per cent wage increase.
No doubt this story will cast the force in a bad light once again as it seeks the public's support in the above-mentioned as well as other areas. For far too long everytime the police has earned the praise or sympathy of the public some members of its ranks have put the force in a negative light. Although the investigations in this latest incident are ongoing, THE STAR hopes the matter will be dealt with speedily and thoroughly as this will go a long way in repairing some of the damage this latest saga may have caused.
