Gyptian making his mark

Gyptian - Contributed

THERE IS A new sound coming from Portmore.

Gyptian is the name of this sound, and just like the previous product of Garveymeade, I-Wayne, the community feels he will trod the same successful path I-Wayne now trods. Gyptian is a budding 23-year-old who has two things going for him right now.

One is the infectious track Serious Times which has slowly seeped into the dancehalls, and the second is his eagerness to make it in the business.

"From I was bout seven or so I started singing at school. I used to do songs in church and people tell me seh I must go out and do things with the music," he explained in an interview recently.

Re-make

A meeting with renowned musician Earl 'Chinna' Smith produced the track Serious Times a few years ago, but it was never released. Gyptian, however, continued to touch several talent shows and small concerts and slowly honed his craft. Since hooking up with 'Mr Wong' in Garveymeade, however, the attention thrown his way has multiplied, especially with the re-make and release of Serious Times.

"Actually, the whole vibe with the tune good right now, everyone a reach out to it and to me, so I have to keep my composure about it. Since we hook up with Mr Wong, I recorded a few more tunes already," he explained.

Easy going

Describing his personality, Gyptian said the world should know that he is an easy going fellow, who is just learning about the Rastafarian faith. "Calm as the breeze would describe me, just cool and easy going," he stated.

He credits Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Luciano, Beres Hammond and other cultural icons as his influences, and for the future, he says he wants to command the same presence as them. "In the next five years or so, I would like to be seen as a worldwide artiste. An international artiste doing tours and shows just like them. I am not signed to any label yet, but we doing some work with Mr Wong."
