Toots' day out

HOW DOES HE do it? Toots is always on the move and when THE STAR spent a day with him on Tuesday, it was evident that this Grammy-winning recording legend is always busy.

Whether it is keeping his body in shape at the gym, or shopping for that unique attire that could 'buss' the place on his next stage show, Toots spares no time to idle.

Toots is a man who is serious about his health, as one of the first things he does to kick off his day is to go to the gym, where his personal trainer Beris Asphall takes him through the routines.

Training

"We do weight training, cardio-vascular training and counselling on like what to eat and what not to eat," Asphall said.

Toots, he said, was very willing and trains at least four days a week from 7 a.m. until around 8:30 or 9 a.m.

There were some equipment that were obvious favourites of Toots, for example, the treadmill and the punching bag. Toots, who used to engage in boxing, particularly enjoys working out on the punching bag and on Tuesday he laughed while throwing some aggressive blows to the bag.

After a full work-out at the gym, it was time to hit the road again and Toots headed to the Music Mart store in Half-Way Tree to shop for a guitar for his granddaughter.

"Yea man, she says she wants a guitar and keyboard, but her hands are small, so I have to get one that's not too big for her," he explained to one of the attendants inside the store.

Obviously very popular with the store's management team and staff, Toots spent more time meeting and greeting and concluded that he would have to bring his granddaughter down to the store for her to select the one she was most comfortable with.

Next stop, Maxbrown clothes store in Sovereign Centre.

"Yea, mi always shop here, me an di manager a like bredda," Toots commented as he entered the store and was immediately greeted by the manager, Mr. Rolin Puranda.

After the initial meeting and greeting and doing a bit of catching up, Toots paraded through the store, sifting through the selection of clothes.

"Yuh know my colours already, yuh nuh have nutt'n large in this?" Toots said as he looked at a shirt.

Toots ended up purchasing two shirts at the store but he would not disclose the cost.

"When him come this side him nah leave out him friend, him haffi come spend a money wid mi," the manager informed THE STAR.

After making his casual rounds on the road, Toots then made a stop at his home to cool off and freshen up before hitting the road again to visit some friends.

The final stop in his short day was spent with some of his friends at a bar off Molynes Road.

"Yow, come inna di kitchen yah man, a roun yah me an dem man yah use to cook an ting," Toots said, as he entered a kitchen located inside the bar.

Laughing, chatting and having a drink with his friends was important to Toots, as he says he never forgets his roots, and he always keeps the link alive.
