C'bar clobbers Clarendon College

CLARENDON COLLEGE PUT up a valiant fight, but it was not enough to stop the Calabar boys from Red Hills Road, St. Andrew, in securing their place in the semi-finals of the TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz 2005 competition yesterday evening.

When the final bell rang Calabar won with 42 points, more than doubling Clarendon's 19 points. From the start of the match, Calabar set a winning pace. When the first segment ended Calabar was on six points, while Clarendon College was on three.

In the first minute of the second segment, Calabar, which is number two seed, was quick on answers and scored six points. Clarendon who was desperate to improve its points standing scored only seven points. The teams continued to build on their points and when the segment ended Calabar was on 24 points, while Clarendon was on 17.

As the teams moved to the final segment, Clarendon, who obviously decided not to go out without putting up a fight, sought to seize the win that was still within reach.

However, they could only score two points to bring their final score to 19. Calabar, on the other hand, got all their questions from that round correct and buzzed their way into the next round of competition.

Fine tuning

As the winning team prepares for the semi-final match, which will be against Kingston College, they said they will be fine tuning their preparation. "We only need two ingredients to win, training and God, and we have both," Kemoy Lindsay, a member of the Calabar team told THE STAR.

Donovan Williams, one of Calabar's coaches, said he thought his team played well and the members only needed to remain focused as they prepared for their next match.

Javon Dunbar, a team member of Clarendon College, which is number 10 seed, said he was disappointed about losing.

However, the team performed better than last year and will do even better next year. "I intend tocaptain the team next year all the way to the win of the competition," the fifth former said.

He pointed out that last year the team had been eliminated at the second round, and thus, this year's performance was certainly an improvement.

Calabar's team: Damar Barnett, Yannick Johnson, Kemoy Lindsay and Aldion Lee (captain).

Clarendon College's team: Kara Walters, Javon Dunbar, Horatio Thompson and Marsham Golding (captain).
