ONLY A FEW months after fire alarms, lights and escapes were installed at the Creative Productions Training Centre (CPTC), they were put to the test when a fire caused by an electrical short circuit engulfed one of the centre's major studios.
A unit each from the Trench Town, York Park and Half Way Tree Brigade responded to the fire which was eventually extinguished sometime after 7 p.m.
No breathing apparatus
A representative from the Trench Town Fire Brigade which arrived first on the scene said that a thick black smoke prevented them from entering the studio. "At first we didn't have breathing apparatus and we called York Park and they sent Half-Way Tree with some equipment to assist us," District Officer Jatinto Thompson from the Trench Town Fire Brigade told THE STAR.
Dr. Hopeton Dunn, chairman of the CPTC said a production was in progress when the fire started. He said the fire set off the alarm which prompted the staff to leave the building.
Dunn said preliminary indications are that the damage was minimal with only preliminary curtaining and carpeting in the studio being damaged. He said there were no damages to other parts of the building which house their archive of tapes which were recently copied and sent to the National Library for safekeeping in case of situations like a fire or other disaster. "The library is safe, the control is safe, the equipment is safe," he said.
