OLD HARBOUR HIGH marched into the semi finals of the Schools' Challenge Quiz for the first time in the schools history after silencing Charlemont High 37-18 in the first match of the quarter-finals yesterday.
Old Harbour started off the match with a strong show of team spirit, answering their questions in harmony. Charlemont kept up, trailing 7-8 at the end of Round 1. However, one point was deducted from Charlemont after a mispronunciation of a French question, debated by the coaches to no avail, bringing the scores to 6-8.
Charlemont suffered badly in round two, gaining only one point from the first minute. Old Harbour capitalised as they galloped past them closing the round off at 29-13. In the final section, Old Harbour was quick on the buzzer for the first few questions.
Charlemont snatched a few opportune questions seemingly already admitting defeat. A high spirited Old Harbour showed no mercy until the final bell, with the scores at 37 to 18.
Old Harbour's captain Julio Maragh was satisfied with his team's victory.
Assistant coach for Old Harbour, Dwight Morgan, was happy for the win. "It (the win) was a mere formality the way we were preparing. Wi jus affi put in di necessary work now fi big up di school."
It was no surprise to Charlemont 's coach Steve Cummings that he didn't receive a miracle win. "This time dem luck jus run short." he said. "I've always had a problem getting them to study." Coach Cummings expected a much better performance from the team as two of its members have now played for Charlemont, the third year in a row.
Kayson Gunzell, Charlemont's captain, confessed that they had played better matches before. "The good thing is that we remained calm and we are too vexed with ourselves now." he said.
Next match: Queen's High School meets Glenmuir High.
