A STORY IN today's STAR speaks of the problem the residents of Riverton City have to face yet again because they live next to the dump, which is often set ablaze.
Others outside of the affected community may ask why they have not bothered to leave, and one resident simply yet adequately summed it up: survival.
For those living in the community with nowhere to escape whenever the smoke screen clears, they still have to risk their health and that of their children in order to earn a living and have a roof over their heads.
How ironic it is that a community which houses those of a lower socio-economic status sits beside a dump. Is this a direct reflection of the thoughts of those who have the power to make a difference, but don't?
What kind of authorities would place a housing scheme next to the dump in the first place?
All the people who live there have ever asked for, is to be able to live in a community where they do not have to sacrifice their health for a panoramic view of a landfill.
