THE SECURITY GUARD who was shot in Thursday night's robbery attempt at the Sunrise Pharmacy and Gift Centre, on Red Hills Road, St. Andrew, succumbed to his injuries later that night.
Dead is Nasseem Russell, 40, employed to Gibraltar Security Company, while injured is a Police Inspector attached to the Jamaica Police Academy (JPA).
The Investigating Officer, present on the scene last night, told THE STAR that at about 7:30 p.m., the Inspector went to the pharmacy to conduct business. While there, two gunmen entered the pharmacy and attempted to rob it. When the police Inspector saw what was happening, he challenged them, and it was during this exchange, that he shot in the buttocks. Russell, who had been employed to protect the pharmacy, was shot in the head, and his firearm taken.
The gunmen then escaped in a waiting motor car.
Russell and the Inspector were taken to the University Hospital, where Russell died while undergoing treatment, and the Inspector treated and released.
Mr.Ainsworth Williams, the manager of the Gibraltar Security Company, described Russell, who had been employed to the company for 10 years, as a hard worker. "He was a very quiet person, a well reserved, hard worker. Someone would be glad to have him on their staff."
