CHARLEMONT HIGH WHICH defeated Wolmers' Girls to advance to the third round of TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz competition, defeated Wolmers' Boys yesterday to advance to the quarter finals.
The St. Catherine school edged their Heroes Circle opponents 20-16. The score was a true reflection of the match as from round one, it appeared to be any team's match as both teams ended on four points each.
In the second round, Wolmers' Boys stepped its game up a notch to gain nine points to end the round with 13 points. Charlemont did not stay far behind scoring six points to reach ten points.
As the teams moved to round three, a point was deducted from Wolmers' Boys for a Spanish question that was incorrectly answered in round two. In round three, it was Charlemont who stayed focused and in the end won its way into the quarter-finals.
Charlemont got all its questions in the buzzer section correct while Wolmers' Boys got almost as many questions wrong as they did correct, ending on 12 points. After the break, it was announced that the Wolmers' team was awarded two points for an answer ruled wrong earlier in the match and returned two points that were deducted from them for the incorrect answer, bringing their final score to 16 points.
God's will
Andrew Jones, Wolmers' coach, said they were disappointed that they lost but they believed it was fate. "It's another match. We lost, but it was God's will; we can't do anything about that," he said. He said Charlemont had a good and experienced team and in the end they proved to be the better team.
Steve Cummings, coach of Charlemont was extremely disappointed with his team's performance although they won and did not hold back his criticisms. "I said last week that we were lucky and I did not see a match and I feel the same way this week. They did not show any improvement," he said. He was also quite pessimistic about his school's chances in their next match that will be against Old Harbour High in the quarter-finals. "Right now, I can't see our way around Old Harbour. It will take a miracle for us to beat them if they (Charlemont ) keep playing as poorly as they have been, " he said.
In the next match the Queen's School will face Munro College.
