Waulgrovians top England Under-21

Veteran netballer and Waulgrovian goal shoot Connie Francis catches a ball ahead of the challenge of England Under-21's Gemma Fletcher (partially hidden). Looking on is England wing defence and captain, Sarah Bayman. Waulgrovians won 47-43. - Ian allen

For the local Berger Paints Super League team, the veteran Connie Francis proved too wily for the visitors and accounted for 34 goals from her 42 attempts. Suzette Desouza was also a destructive force to the visitors after she bagged 13 goals from 17 tries.

The visitors were in trouble as early as the first quarter when they trailed 14-11. However a spate of errors in possession on Waulgrovians part, saw the local team giving up their valuable lead to end the second quarter at 28-25 to the visitors.

Better ball care

The Oberon Pitterson-led group took better care of the ball in the third quarter and fought their way back to a position of dominance at 38-31 before holding that lead down the stretch.

A small group of Jamaican Under-21s sat in the audience watching the proceedings and must have been pleased with what they saw.

While the English team showed good attacking skills with their quick wing attack Sasha Corbin and goal attack Pamela Cookey, who led their scoring with 13 goals from 17 attempts, they were woeful in defending against the locals.

To be fair, they were playing against a team that has vast international experience, but the game must have given the youngsters hope going into the first friendly game this evening at 6:30 p.m.

Meanwhile in the first games of the Berger super League at the Leila Robinson Courts, Jamalco started their season in impressive form, annihilating Seneca 'A' 74-20, and Police 'A' pushed their way into the winners circle with a 46-41 victory over Tivoli 'B'.
