ON THURSDAY THE nation was left asking questions after an attempted prison break at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre left one Correctional Officer and three inmates dead.
Although the incident happened five days ago, THE STAR has to wonder if enough was done to secure the inmates of the institution. The fact that a gun was allowed to enter the walls of the institution should be cause for concern for taxpayers and the authorities alike.
THE STAR does not wish to cast blame on any particular body, as the prison authorities are carrying out investigations to find out where the security breach took place. But, as the investigations progress, the public must at this time be wondering about the security at the other penal institutions.
To think that a maximum security institution could have had such a breach is indeed cause for concern as it relates to the others that do not fall in this category.
Nevertheless, THE STAR hopes that Thursday's incident is never repeated at any of the island's penal institutions. We hope that when the report has been prepared, if anyone is found responsible they will be dealt with accordingly.
Taking additional care will not bring back those who lost their lives on Thursday, but it will go a far way though in ensuring that a repeat of this incident does not take place and no more lives are lost.
