AFTER A NECK-and-neck match in the first two segments of play, Knox College proved the champions over Mannings High in yesterday's episode of the Schools' Challenge Quiz competition, aired on TVJ last night.
The match ended with a seven point lead for Knox College (35-28). However, from the moment the first question was asked to the final answer given in the second segment, both teams were always one point apart, first with Mannings leading 9-8, then Knox, 25-24.
Moments after presenter Marlene Stephenson-Daley declared "It's Do or Die" in the buzzer segment, Knox seemed to take this as their cue.
It was a mad dash to the finish, however. Mannings lost most of the points shortly after earning the customary two points for each correct answer, while their counterparts excelled, missing one question.
Alexander Bourne, coach for the winning team told THE STAR that they were satisfied, as their team were mainly fifth formers and had performed above their academic level.
"They performed outside their curriculum, especially with the mathematics and physics questions," he said.
This, he and fellow coach, Andre Douglas, attributed to long training sessions from the first weeks in August through to quiz time.
Coach for Mannings' team, Francis Blythe said that his team gave it a great effort, but they became anxious in the last moments of the game.
"It is a matter of anxiety; they tried to rush and this broke their concentration," he said.
One of the team members said that their major problem was literature, as they excelled in other areas.
