Andrews, Wolmer's lead the way

By ELTON TUCKER, Asst. Sport Editor

ST. HUGH'S HIGH'S Pheleicia Reynolds became the first double winner of the 2005 VMBS Boys' and Girls' Championships when she won the shot put open on day two of the four-day meet yesterday.

Reynold's heaved the shot put 12.44m to add another nine points to the first place she got in the discus on Wednesday.

It ensured that St. Hugh's climbed to sixth spot behind leaders St. Andrew High in the girls' section of the meet.

Reynolds, though happy with her win, felt her performance lacked some quality as she did not get up to a personal best.

"I am disappointed that I didn't record my personal best, which would have taken the record (shot put). However, I am grateful for the double" she said.

High jumper Anna-Kaye Campbell kept St. Andrew High in front when she easily took the Class One high jump.

Campbell won with a leap of 1.71m to defeat Suelyn Pilliner of St. Jago (1.65m) and Alpha's Cadeen James (1.55m).

After eight finals in the girls' section, St. Andrew lead with 49.5 points, nine ahead of favourites Vere on 40.5, St. Jago 29, Wolmer's 28, Mannings 25 and defending Holmwood on 21. They are followed by St. Hugh's , Alpha and Morant Bay on 18, Manchester High 17, Immaculate 11, Edwin Allen eight, Glengoffe 4.5, St. Mary's College three, Oberlin two, Yallahs 1.5, Aabuthnott Gallimore and Bridgeport, one each.

Wolmer's Boys scored a good win in the Class Three boys high jump to move ahead of defending champions Kingston College.

Christopher Waugh, 1.84m, beat back strong challenges from St. George's Kimarki Absalam who also had a best height of 1.84m and Calabar's Deuce Carter, 1.81m, to strike gold for the Heroes Circle-based school.

The points standings after four finals shows Wolmer's on 27 points, Kingston Colllege (KC) 23, Jamaica College 20, St. Jago 17.5, Mannings 17, Calabar 15, Bridgeport 14, Morant Bay 13, St. George's seven, Herbert Morrison five, Manchester High two and Campion a half point.

In the lone track semi-finals run off late yesterday, KC showed why they will be hard to beat with strong performances in the 800m for Classes Two and Three.
Adrian Bonner and Donohue Williams both advanced from Class Three and the school from North Street could be looking at a one-two in this event.

Danzeto Cephas also won well in Class Two clocking 1:57.93 to emerge the leading qualifier but he will have his hands full against the hot favourite Theon O'Connor of Campion College (1:59.58).

Neither KC or Calabar have any qualifiers in Class One 800m where the leading qualifier is Holmwood's Davian Parker who clocked 1:52.73 in winning semi-final heat one.

Neck and neck

On the girls' side, Holmwood Technical and Vere Technical will be neck and neck in the 800m.

Vere are strong in Class Three with the front-running Tenisha Davis, Holmwood are set to dominate Class Two with Bobby-Gaye Wilkins and Vanessa Boyd but Vere will counter with last year's Class Three champion Petrona Layne. Layne goes into tomorrow's final with the fastest time, 2:17.60 but Wilkins who is seeking a 800m-400m double looks in unbeatable form.

The situation is the same in Class One. Vere's Stacy-Ann Bell has the fastest qualifying time (2:15.22) but Holmwood's Celia Whyte (2:16.00) and Cassandra Powell (2:15.33) will be breathing down her neck.

The gruelling two-day heptathlon went to Mannings High's Hickel Woolery who scored 4,564 points. Morant Bay's Dwight Webley (4,455) was second and Jamaica's College's Orland Duffus (4,381) third and KC's Olando Beckfor (4,368) fourth.

Eleven boys and 12 girls finals are on today. They include the 100m metres finals, 1500m and 400m hurdles.

Other winners yesterday were Bridgeport's Camoi Hood who took the Class One discus with a throw of 51.05m. Holmwood's Sashawna Bennett won the Class Four long jump at 5.51m. Morant Bay's Kimora Smith won the girls' Class Two long jump with a leap of 5.93m while the Wolmer's pair of Anna-Lisa Myers and Janelle Gordon finished one-two in the Class Three high jump. Both cleared 1.63m.
