THE EDITOR, MADAM:
The Board of Directors of Meadowrest Memorial Gardens, a project of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has instructed me to express our outrage at the inaccurate information conveyed in the article and the accompanying picture and caption on the front page of your paper of January 12, 2005.
The caption on page 1 reads in part "...as she looks at his body at a makeshift coffin in Meadowrest...". The clear implication is that the picture so captioned was taken at Meadowrest. The article on page 3 refers to "...when the STAR visited Meadowrest, several dried blood spots were seen...". The facts are that no body was ever found AT or IN Meadowrest, but at least one mile from our premises in a place called Page on the way to Paul Mountain.
The mentioned caption and article also referred to "...in the Meadowrest area..." and "...near the Meadowrest Memorial Park...".
Are these misrepresentations deliberate? Are they the result of sloppy journalism? Or, are they a combination of both?
I am etc.,
S.LeRoi Lorde J.P.
