MUNRO COLLEGE QUALIFIED for the third round of the Schools' Challenge Quiz Competition last night when they defeated Ocho Rios High 21-11 in a lacklustre affair.
Munro, who were playing their first match in this season's competition, appeared rusty and lacked the sharpness of previous years when they were one of the most feared teams.
If Ocho Rios had maintained their composure in the buzzer section, then maybe another seeded team would be making preparations for next year's contest. But, it was Munro who held their nerves and came away winners.
While grateful for the win, Munro's coach Noelle Hoskins acknowledged that her team performed way below their number six ranking.
"Hopefully, this will give the guys exposure in what the competition is about. But, we have a lot of work to do," she said.
The match started off slower than expected with both teams squandering question after question. In one instance, Ocho Rios was asked to name someone who explored mines to which they said an archaeologist when it was in fact a prospector.
The slip ups continued and the section ended 6-4 for Munro.
In section two, neither team could answer five questions correctly in a minute. Hence, the boredom continued and the section finished with Munro leading 14-11. Munro were awarded an extra point during the break and the score entering the buzzer section read 15-11 in their favour.
In the buzzer section, Ocho Rios staged a brief comeback and tied on 15-15 with Munro. They were, however, unable to maintain this and finished the match on 11 points while their opponents moved to 21.
Phillip Clarke, team captain for Ocho Rios High, said his team "lost focus although the win was within our grasp".
