Differences that bind
By MARLENE MCPHERSON - STAR Writer

NO MATTER HOW closely some twins resemble, most of the time each has a different personality.

Take St. Thomas Technical High School students Juliann and Julia Smith. They have captivating smiles, they are pleasant and very keen listeners, yet their personalities are very different. One is highly opinionated and the other very reserved and private.

Juliann and Julia Smith were born to Miss Yvonne Christie on Christmas Day, 1987. Miss Christie was unaware that she was pregnant with twins.

"I felt no difference in movement. It was when Juliann was born that the nurse said to me there is another baby... I just accepted them," she recalled, adding that their father Davyton Smith was very happy when they were born.

Ms. Christie explained that both girls were normal little children except "that they loved to fight for simple things."

She told THE WEEKEND STAR about the main difference between them. "Juliann was quiet but Julia was a troublemaker." Juliann's quiet disposition became evident when THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to her at the family residence at Harbour Head Road, Port Morant, St. Thomas. She only disclosed that she likes the colours red and pink, aims to be a lecturer in literature and enjoys reading and writing. "I enjoy my own company," she revealed.

Julia, on the other hand was outspoken. This personality generated conversation. She listed singing, listening to music, reading novels, socialising and meeting new friends as her hobbies.

According to Julia, journalism is a field that grabs her interest, "because I love reading and writing stories..." Her favourite colours are pink and purple. She said she likes to wear simple yet unusual clothes that is different from her sister's.

"I am only one. I cannot do everything but I can do some things. I am not refusing any opportunity to do more things," Julia said quoting her philosophy on life.

She adds that she sees herself as intelligent, hardworking and ambitious.

Both girls went to the same schools and were in the same classes up until high school where this changed. They were placed in different classes. The two say sometimes they quarrel but they have been able to live lovingly despite differing viewpoints.
