CINDERELLA TEAM LENNON High continued their fairy tale season yesterday, advancing to the semi-finals of the ISSA Ben Francis Knockout competition after beating Godfrey Stewart High 1-0 in a battle of first-time quarter-finalists at the Brancourt field in Clarendon.
Goalkeeper John Powell scored a first half penalty for the Clarendon team coached by former national Under-23 player Wilfred Smith and Lincoln Cockett. They will contest their first ever major semi-final on November 17, facing daCosta Cup champions Frome Technical.
Lennon on the go
In the other semi-final, which will also be played on November 17, three time winners Glenmuir High will tackle Titchfield High.
Despite being beaten twice by former champions Clarendon College and finishing 10 points behind them in the daCosta Cup standings, Lennon have advanced to the quarter-finals of the daCosta Cup and semi-finals of the Knockout. Clarendon College were knocked out at the Inter-Zone stage.
Frome booked their place with a 1-0 win over another first time qualifier, Christiana High, at the Frome Sports Grounds.
Biggest win
Carnell Learmond scored twice and Steven Morrissey once as Glenmuir beat Black River High 3-0 at STETHS for the biggest win of the round whereas Titchfield eased past Dinthill 2-0 at Drax Hall.
In the game played at STETHS, Glenmuir took their time to settle, allowing Black River to take the game to them but once they got into stride after about 15 minutes it was only a matter of time and how many goals they would score.
Learmond, who increased his tally in the Ben Francis and daCosta Cup to 20, put the Clarendon team ahead in the 18th minute when he sent a glancing header past goalkeeper Everaldo Walters from a free-kick taken on the right side.
He added a second in the 26th minute when he tapped into a wide-open goal after.
Black River rallied briefly and had two good chances late in the half but national junior representative Erron Brown pulled off two good saves to deny them.
Brown parried a low hard free kick from Everett Mullings in the 33rd minute for a corner then scrambled to his right to make a save at the foot of the goal post in the 39th minute.
Learmond should have added a third in the 62nd minute after he rounded Walters at the top of the box but his shot curled just wide of the far left post.
Morrissey, who had replaced Doyley at the start of the second half, got the third in the 69th minute when he dribbled straight down the middle of the Black River defence and shot past the advancing Walters, celebrating before the ball crossed the goal line.
An acrobatic scissors kick from the Glenmuir captain Ricardo Cousins was well saved by Walters in the 74th minute as the Clarendon team threatened to add to their lead. Morrissey also had a shot from point blank range blocked.
