William Knibb, Garvey Maceo hunt wins

Western Bureau:

WILLIAM KNIBB AND Garvey Maceo will seek at least a share of the lead in their respective Zones in the ISSA Pepsi/ Sports Plus daCosta Cup rural area schoolboys' football competition tomorrow.

Two games are scheduled, William Knibb travel to Jarrett Park to face winless Anchovy. Garvey Maceo, fresh from a 5-0 drubbing of Bustamante yesterday, will host Central at Brancourt. Both games will start at 3:30 p.m.

William Knibb were also winners yesterday, blanking St. James High 2-0 at Elliston Wakeland and could join Cornwall at the top of Zone A with six points with a win tomorrow.

Garvey Maceo will be hoping to at least tie Glenmuir on points if they can get by Central, who drew 1-1 with Kemps Hill yesterday.

Meanwhile, defending champions Frome Technical started their defence on a positive note, blanking Grange Hill 2-0 at the Belle Isle Sports Complex with goals from Sedane McCreath in the 19th and Delano Rankine three minutes into time added on.

Competitive game

The win took the Boysie Nicholson coached team to joint lead in Zone B with Grange Hill, both on six points, followed by Merlene Ottey, three, and Rusea's and Knockalva on one each.

A huge crowd was on hand at Belle Isle to watch a competitive game that went down to the wire as the Frome goalkeeper Tristan Somerville was forced to make two good saves early in the second half to preserve his team's lead.

Somerville blocked a low short with his legs in the 53rd minute and then went to the top left hand corner in the 58th to turn away a long-range drive for a corner.

Elsewhere, last season's beaten finalists Titchfield, former champions Cornwall College and Brimmer Vale scored their second straight win while former champions St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Munro College each scored wins as play started in Zone E.

Cornwall edged Herbert Morrison 1-0 at Jarrett Park to extend their unbeaten streak against their Montego Bay rivals to nine seasons in what was described as a sloppy game.

Titchfield beat Seaforth 2-1 in Zone L and STETHS clipped Balaclava 2-1 and Munro edged Maggotty 1-0.

Former champions Rusea's High are seeking their first win after being held to a 1-1 draw by Knockalva in Zone B after being beaten 3-1 by Grange Hill in their opening game last Saturday.
