By RASBERT TURNER, Star Writer SPANISH TOWN:
SENATOR BRUCE GOLDING appeared in the Spanish Resident Magistrate's court yesterday and was fined $3,000 or 30 days hard labour for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.
Golding's appearance arose out of an incident along the Old Harbour main road in St. Catherine on April 24, 2004 at 9 p.m. when he was observed speeding and was signalled to stop by a policeman. He did not stop, but sped off and a chase ensued.
He was caught along Featherbed Lane and was ticketed for dangerous driving, exceeding the speed limit and failing to obey the command of a police officer.
Dangerous driving
When Mr. Golding appeared before Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar Gayle he pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving. Golding's lawyer, Wenthworth Charles, told the court that on the day his client was stopped he did not recognise that it was a police officer and that is why he drove away.
Charles then told the court that the charge of careless driving would be correct, the court accepted and Golding pleaded guilty and was fined $3,000 or 30 days.
The charge of failing to obey the police was withdrawn by the crown.
Golding was in June fined $7,000 for exceeding the speed limit. The senator has also had eight points deducted from his driver's licence arising from the two breaches.
