THE CENTRE FOR the Investigation of Sexual Offences (CISO) is appealing to the offspring and relatives of elderly persons to make proper arrangements for them.
The CISO's appeals come in light of recent attacks on elderly women. Last week an 85-year-old woman was raped and beaten at her home in St. Catherine.
While in early August, 81-year-old Lillian Samuels of Stewart Hill district, Crofts Hill, Clarendon was found dead at her home. Investigators later revealed that she had been sexually assaulted.
These increasing attacks against elderly have been very worrying for the CISO, who say that greater vigilance on the part of relatives will go a far way in protecting the elderly.
Inspector Dutress Foster-Gardener of the CISO told THE WEEKEND STAR that relatives have to take care of their elderly. "We are asking the children of elderly folks to make proper arrangements for them. Have somebody with them, do not allow them to sleep alone as persons are targeting the elderly," she said.
She also added that parents who live in Jamaica should not leave their children in the care of grand parents. "This is not fair to the grandparents and most times they are not able to control the children. We are asking parents to desist from this practice right away," said Foster-Gardener.
"If it comes to the knowledge of the police, we will be forced to step in," she warned.
