Viagra?????
Jamaican men have long been hung up about their bedroom performance and as such have taken strange pills and concoctions to improve their abilities. Now, some of the younger species have taken a liking to a new edition on the sexual frontier Viagra!
The 'little blue pill' as Viagra is more commonly called, is a prescribed drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, usually a problem for older men. But, some young Jamaican men are now using it as both an aphrodisiac and a performance enhancer.
"Di pill wicked man," claimed Viagra enthusiast 23-year-old Raymon Williams.
"When mi tek it, it mek mi stand up stiff, stiff, stiff. And you can work fi like all three hours non stop."
Also boasting of impressive results with Viagra is Leon. "Mi nah tell nuh lie is nuff tings mi try and dem nuh work like di blue pill," the 21-year-old claimed. "Trust me Viagra mek mi turn Superman inna di bedroom."
However, Pfizer the makers of Viagra, seem to not know of their drug's other useage. On their website they say, "Viagra is a medicine that treats this problem by increasing blood flow where you need it. With Viagra, you must be sexually excited to get an erection. If you take Viagra and are not sexually stimulated, nothing will happen. You won't get an erection just by taking the pill. Viagra is not an aphrodisiac or a hormone. It's a medicine that treats the physical problem of ED (erectile dysfunction)."
Both men claim they do not have a problem getting it up, nor do they have a problem satisfying their partners on their own, but as Leon put it 'everybody need a little boost'.
And apparently, Jamaican men are not the only ones who use Viagra to boost themselves. A recent study undertaken by Express Scripts, an American Prescription drug tracking service, has found that young men are leading a surge in use of the drug.
According to the study men between the 18-45 age group increased their use of the drug by 312 per cent. The study said the majority of these men had no physical problem and were using the drug for recreation purposes.
Interestingly both young men believe that using a drug designed to help older men get a rise, will make them go through the roof.
"Yeah Viagra is originally for an old man, but if it it work fi old man, imagine what it can do fi a man my age," said Leon.
"Any man who want to work it good can use Viagra, dat is how me feel," Williams added.
Locally, Viagra enthusiasts have found new ways of getting their supply. Williams says he purchases the pill for $500 each from a 'supplier' downtown. In the pharmacy, 50mg of Viagra costs $812. While Leon gets them from his sister who is a pharmacist.
But do the pills actually give the boost that the men claim? According to Althea, 24, Leon's girlfriend, there's no difference. "He was good before and he is good now. I don't see any difference," she said.
Dr. Keith Clarke who operates in St. Andrew, dismissed the men's claim. "It really should not have much effect on them," he said."Viagra works on men who have a physiological problem, it is not an aphrodisiac and as such should really not have much effect on them."
Clarke said two of his younger patients have tried to get him to prescribe the drug for them, believing it would provide some performance enhancement capablities. "I refused. There was nothing physically wrong with them, they were following a tale. Men at their ages are naturally able to go for hours and in fact they might end up harming themselves as nobody knows what the long term effects of ill usage of this prescription drug are."
However, Williams is unconcerned. "If in the future mi need additional help, dem will find a new drug," he said.
