THE MAYOR OF London has reportedly thrown his support behind a vigil scheduled for next week, intended at pressuring the Jamaican government to repeal buggery laws.
The vigil comes on the heels of another which was held yesterday outside the Jamaican High Commission in London for murdered gay rights activist Brian Williamson. Williamson, 59, a founding member of Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (JFLAG) who was murdered at his New Kingston flat three weeks ago.
The London Mayor, Ken Livingstone was reported on homosexual website, GayUk.com as saying, "I am proud that London continues to lead the way in moving towards lesbian and gay equality, but as the murder of Brian Williamson shows, homophobia continues to have tragic consequences all over the world."
Robbery
Still, local police authorities who are investigating Williamson's murder maintain that his death was a consequence of robbery gone bad. They have one of two suspects in custody. The name of the suspect has not yet been released because of a pending identification parade.
Nonetheless, gay activists overseas are continuing to use Williamson's murder as proof of Jamaica's alleged homophobic nature. Some have gone as far as to criticise the Jamaican government for not commenting on Williamson's murder.
According to Peter Tatchell, a London-based gay rights activist, "The Jamaican Prime Minister P. J. Patterson, has said nothing about Williamson's murder. The entire Jamaican political establishment has ignored his horrific killing."
