RENOWNED GAY rights activist Brian Williamson was killed yesterday at his property in New Kingston. He was brutally hacked to death. What makes this murder more noticeable than most others is the fact that Williamson was the spokesperson for JFLAG the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexual and Gays.
Although the police do not believe Williamson's sexual orientation had anything to do with his death, the murder is somewhat disturbing, since the shadow of a hate crime inevitably hangs over the incident.
To make matters worse, Williamson's kind nature, which was extolled by his friends, may have indirectly contributed to his death, since the last person seen with the slain man was someone who, it is said, Williamson had helped on numerous occasions.
The point is, whether or not one does not agree with another's lifestyle choices, that is certainly no reason for them to die. In addition, killing someone who tries to help others, in a robbery for example, goes beyond simply being wrong and crosses the line into sheer evil.
It is hoped that the killer or killers will be brought to justice and that tolerance will be practised towards one's fellow man, regardless of how they decide to live their lives.
