Who's the best lyricist?

TODAY THE STARVIBES makes a big splash on a feature they started last Monday about who is the top artiste-lyricist.

For many a year those who are truly ignorant about Jamaican music and others who snub it have got up on soap boxes making blanket statements about the quality of the lyrics by contemporary artistes'.

The claim most of the time is that the quality of lyrics from Jamaican contemporary entertainers is poor. But is this really true?

It is a fact that there are nonsensical lyrics being output by some artiste. But like any other genre that is all a part of the mix. It is not the nature of entertainment to be forever serious.

We would therefore contend that it is not true to suggest that Jamaican contemporary artistes do not write quality songs. Over the years and even now there is an abundance of riveting lyrics for those who choose to hear them. THE STAR will be bold enough too to suggest that more riveting lyrics are being written now than back in the day these songs might just not be getting any exposure.

Much of the country's shortcomings - from its rich and poor and most importantly from our leaders has been documented through the work of contemporary deejays and singers.

Rather than berate the music, we ought to spend some time just to listen to what is being said. Pretty often our contemporary artistes are very firmly in touch with the issues that really matter to the average Jamaican.

We watch with interest to see who you, the people, will select as the top ten artistes/lyricists.
