POLICE COMMISSIONER Francis Forbes made a very interesting disclosure recently when he said there was a direct link between drug cartels and Caribbean politicians.
With those words Commissioner Forbes may have opened a can of worms. He has confirmed what many people here may have long suspected and now that the beans have been spilled it would be interesting to hear what John Public has to say.
The commissioner was making a presentation at the four-day Rotary Club International Conference at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Montego Bay, St. James. He was quoted as saying that while there is an increased collaboration between drug cartels with an increasing number of Caribbean states, "There is also intelligence linking political parties to them as well."
He said many people in the intelligence community are of the view that if such alliances continue a prime minister or a minister of national security could very well be influenced by drugs bosses.
Forbes' statements may be causing more bad than good as now almost every politician here in Jamaica could be under the public microscope.
He has stirred up an ants nest which will no doubt test the fragile trust many Jamaicans have in our politicians. Now, whether Jamaican politicians are involved, the good among them will be suffering for the bad.
The onus is now on the commissioner to shed more light on the matter because he has thrown politicians to the mercy of the public and we Jamaicans are a strange bunch who believe that a person, politician or not, is guilty until proven innocent.
