Overseas boost for volleyball

FOUR OVERSEAS-BASED players are expected to join the national volleyball squads shortly as the prepare for the 10th Caribbean Volleyball Championships, scheduled for Barbados, June 25 to July 4.

The four are Simone Forbes and Dionne Coley (Mercy College, New York) along with Steve Reid (studying in Australia) and Namarie Gordon (Queens College, New York).

The teams are under the guidance of technical director, Phillip Greenland along with the coaching staff of Dervent Clarke, Roy Taylor, Ortnel Findlay and Oneil Ebanks and trainer is Marcello Gooden. The management team will consist of Jeniffer Evans (Caribbean zonal volleyball representative) and Michael Clarke.

Training is on weekdays at the UWI/UTECH facility and on weekends at the GC Foster College.

The final 12 players for both teams will be selected early June and a series of practices matches are expected to be organised to ensure that the teams get game ready.

Meanwhile, president of JaVA, Carole Beckford, is expected leaves the island today to attend the 29th World Volleyball Congress in Porto, Portugal May 12 and 13.

Beckford is expected to make a presentation on how to market volleyball in the North, Central America and the Caribbean (NORCECA) region, which includes the USA and Canada, and also a country presentation. The country presentation is to help to position Jamaica as a destination to host international beach and indoor volleyball on the international calendar. She is president of the marketing commission for the NORCECA group.
