Gunman disarmed, one-apartment house destroyed by fire

A GUNMAN WHO held up and robbed a man of a cellular telephone at Victoria Pier in downtown Kingston on Saturday, was disarmed of the firearm by his victim and the weapon later handed over to the police.

The Constabulary Communications Network reports that at about 6:14 a.m. a man was having his motor vehicle washed at the Pier when he was approached by a man who held him at gunpoint and robbed him of a Panasonic telephone. A struggle developed between the men and a homemade handgun with one 9mm cartridge was taken from the gunman. He escaped on foot in the area.

In another incident a man was arrested and charged with breach of the Firearms Act following the seizure of a .45 semi-automatic pistol from him in Kingston on Saturday.

Act suspiciously

Facing the charge is Dwayne 'Shortman' Grant, 19, of Gaynstead Avenue in Kingston. Grant, a plumber, was arrested on Seaward Drive, Olympic Gardens in Kingston 11 and charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The police reports that a team of officers were on patrol along Seaward Drive at about 11:45 a.m. when Grant was spotted. It is alleged that when the police approached him, he began to act suspiciously. He was searched and a .45 semi-automatic pistol with three rounds taken from him. He was then arrested and charged.

Meanwhile fire, suspected to be the work of arsonists, destroyed a one-apartment board house at Taylor Land, Nine Miles, Bull Bay, St. Andrew yesterday. No one was injured.

The CCN reports that at about 1 a.m. fire was seen coming from the house and a man running from the location. Residents attempted to put out the blaze, which quickly engulfed the building.

Losses are estimated at $80,000. The house was not insured.
