The law concerning seizing motor vehicles

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I would like to have some clarification on the law pertaining to the seizure of motor vehicles.

The police have been ticketing offenders, seizing their vehicles and taking their car keys.

In some cases the individuals have been unable to find their cars because they do not know to which parking lot they have been sent. Tickets with fines of $10,000 have been given with another $5,000 for retrieving the car.

This system benefits owners of two trucks, some of whom are police. The penal charge also encourages corruption. It is easier to pay $5,000 than $15,000.

My concern is whether the police have a right to seize the car and also take the car keys.

Please clarify for all motorists to avoid confrontation.

I am, etc.,
