DIGICEL ISLANDWIDE NETWORK experienced problems over the weekend as customers overloaded its system trying to take advantage of a new extra credit promotion.
Digicel celebrated its achievement of exceeding one million customers by announcing that it would be giving a $100 extra credit each month to every customer.
However, Jamaicans heard something else and over the weekend it was rumoured that the company was giving away free credit which prompted a run on the system.
On Saturday, several Digicel numbers were busy, or at times unavailable and this spilled over into Sunday.
One irate Digicel customer complained to THE STAR that the run on the system caused her to miss an important call from overseas. "My family could not get through to me all day on Saturday and even yesterday. I am not able to receive or make any calls on my cell phone," she said.
Other customers who spoke with THE STAR were not as upset because they were trying to make the most of the 'free credit' situation. "The only problem I have now is that I cannot add credit to the phone to get the additional credit," said Andrew Mighty, another Digicel customer.
When THE STAR contacted Digicel, an operator said the company was aware of the problems and apologised to their customers as they tried to rectify the situation.
