Get to know those shortcuts

By CHAOS, Freelance Writer

AS I MENTIONED last week, quite a number of people seem not to realize just how much easier it would be to use their cell phones if they just knew the shortcuts.

Just what is a shortcut you ask? Put it this way, instead of having to use your up and down arrows and pressing any number of buttons to say, set the alarm, every cellular telephone is set up with a way to make this process simpler. All you have to do is learn it - of course they vary from model to model.

Take the Samsung STH-N275 for example. To, say, set the alarm, normally you would have to press the 'Menu' button, scroll down to 'Organizer' - four button presses - press the 'Menu/Select' button again, scroll down to 'Alarm' - three presses, press the 'Menu/Select' button again, and again, and then input the time you want your telephone to bring you back from the land of Nod.

Or--

You can just press the 'Menu' button, and then the 5 and then the 4 button and put in the time. A lot simpler don't you think?

In the weeks to come, I will be treating you to shortcuts for all sorts of different models, but if the truth be told, you do not really need my help. Just pay attention to what comes up on your screen when you press certain keys and sooner or later, you will be sailing on your own. Try it.

What we are doing today is teaching you how to send a handy email or two from your telephone. Wait, that should read Digicel cellular telephone, since, well, I still am having difficulty sending one to or from my Cable and Wireless cellphone. It is really quite simple. From your phone, all you have to do is go to where you send your text messages from, enter the section where you compose a message and the first thing you do is enter the person's email address. Then you leave a space and enter the message. Next up, you go into options or whatever the variant on your phone is, and select 'send'. Enter '555' and voila! Your message is on its way to cyberspace.

OK, I know some of us want more detailed instructions, so here goes. If you have a Nokia 3310 or 3210, from your main screen, do the following:

From your main screen, the one that says 'Digicel', press the largest button, the one at just below your screen.

Press the down arrow, the one at the bottom of the key to the right of the abovementioned button.

Keep on doing so until you see 'Messages'. In fact, by pressing the down button, you should only have to do so once.

Press the largest button again. You should see 'Write Messages'.

Press the largest button again.

Type in the person's email address, for example, chaos_theory@ureach.com or star@gleanerjm.com

You get the '@' symbol by pressing the '+' key and using the down arrow to go to the symbol. It is to the right of the symbol in the middle of the screen.

Enter a space - by pressing the '0' key.

Type in your message.

Press the largest button again.

The word 'Send' should appear, just press the largest button again.

Your email has been sent.
