Village grab fourth spot in Premier League

Western Bureau:

Last season's semi-finalists Village United scored three times in the final 24 minutes last night to beat former champions Seba United 4-0 in their Wray And Nephew National Premier League (NPL) third round return leg game at Jarrett Park, to move into fourth place in the standings with one preliminary game to go.

While the Trelawny team are looking ahead to return to the semi-finals it was the end of the road for the Montego Bay team as they were officially eliminated and will play in the Western Confederation Super League next season.

Penalty kick

Kirk Hendricks from the penalty spot in time added on at the end of the first half, second half substitute Teofore Bennett in the 66th, Daniel Ricketts in the 86th and Chris Dawes in the 88th carried Village to their fifth straight win and 56 points, three more than Waterhouse.

Reno who have had a difficult season, secured their place in the top league after a 3-1 win over eliminated Star Cosmos at Frome. Nyron Davis scored twice, in the 30th and 84th minutes while Ian Palmer got the other in the 44th and Horace James scored for Star Cosmos in the 63rd minute.

At Jarrett Park, Seba were competitive for the first half and should have gone into the break on level terms but for an ill-advised tackle in the box from Venton Evans as he brought down Ricketts just inside the box. Hendricks then calmly slotted home past Alrick Henry who went the wrong way.

Upper hand

Up to that point it was the home team that had the upper hand as they took the game to the Village team with schoolboy Lushane Brent-Harris and Norman Foster leading the charge.

The late first half goal gave Village some confidence and they came out in the second half firing on all cylinders with Ricketts, Bennett who replaced an ineffective Shane Crawford and Ian McAnuff running at will at the Seba defence.

Bennett's addition in particular added life to the Village attack as they forced Seba on the defensive and by midway the half it was one-way traffic.
